International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. During the assembly on March 8, Ark William Parker Year 8 students heard how many women and girls across the world are still unable to reach their full potential; how they lack access to a proper education, family planning facilities, safe homes and career opportunities. Deborah Grimmer Head of Year 8 says support and promotion for the annual event is needed until every female has these things and that students showed a real understanding of issues that prevent gender equality.
“International Women’s Day is a chance for us to connect women’s struggles in the UK and across the world,” she said. “It is vital that we encourage boys and men to stand in solidarity with women and girls to highlight inequalities faced by females nationally and globally.

Gender equality will benefit males as well as females and the idea that unity is a powerful tool for change is as true now as it has ever been.”
Many students were also keen to sign the pledge on the White Ribbon campaign website which promises to speak up and stand against violence towards women.
