Police were alerted after a report that a hand grenade had been found.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was also scrambled to the scene.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police were called after a grenade found at an address in Stockleigh Road, St Leonards at 1.15pm on Saturday (February 20).”
A cordon was set up while work was carried out.
However, the object was not as dangerous as first feared.
The spokesman added: “The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) attended the scene and determined the device was an ornament.
“It was taken away by the EOD. “Police were stood down at 5.45pm.”
