There were strong objections when Reside Developments Limited submitted plans to demolish four semi detached homes on the land in The Street and build five new houses. One of the conditions attached to permission which was granted last year despite the raft of protests, was developers should submit plans on how building would take place and crucially outline their proposed construction access route. The access proposed cuts across a green in front of the listed Homes of Rest building which is to remain on the site. And after scrutinising proposals villagers have branded them ‘unacceptable’ claiming access was one of their main objections to the whole development. The plans, they say, prove their case that the development cannot not be carried out in a ‘safe and neighbourly’ fashion. Graffham parish councillors said: “It does enforce the council’s stance throughout that this development cannot be carried out within the confines of the development area.” They said the listed Homes of Rest building overlooked the green and ‘is itself a centrepiece to the Conservation Area and an important aspect of the setting of the Homes of Rest’. “At no time during the planning process was the use of the green considered or mentioned as a material store, car park and roadway.” They are also concerned over road safety as the road provides access to the Infants School and the back gates to Seaford College and is busy at school dropping off and picking up times. The frequency of lorry delivery and type of vehicles made ‘very worrying’ reading and “confirms the parish council’s views from the outset that such vehicular activity at this point in The Street will cause serious problems for all concerned.” Construction traffic would ‘result in chaos’ parish councillors added.
