LETTER: I foresee trouble ahead for UK
Michael Harris (September 22) in imagining a golden future ahead when Britain leaves the European Union appears to be living in a land of make believe.
It is obvious to me that David Cameron called the referendum in 2016 in order to buy off the threat posed to his party by the rise of UKIP and to appease those in his own party who tend to look back nostalgically to our imperial past and who have no clear vision for the future.

Hide AdMr Cameron’s reckless gamble backfired spectacularly and the period that has followed has seen Government ministers squabbling amongst themselves over the direction of Brexit while the NHS and schools continue to be underfunded, the least well off among our population have to depend on food banks for survival and police stations are closed while gun and knife crime and acid attacks continue to increase.
Perhaps Stephen Lloyd, our MP, could ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much taxpayers’ money is being devoted to the Brexit process while these crucial policy areas suffer neglect?
The outcome of the referendum (which Mr Cameron no more needed to call than Mrs May needed to call the recent General Election) has left this country more divided than it has been at any time since the miners’ strike.
It is clear that we are travelling down a blind alley with no guarantee of a satisfactory outcome.
From every conceivable angle I foresee troubled times ahead.
