Clare Palmer, 47, has owned her dog walking business Miss Pixie’s Pets since July after being made redundant by the RSCPA two years ago.
As her client base grew, she realised there was no Facebook group for the thousands of dog owners in Littlehampton to connect, share tips and make friends.

“I never thought there would be that many in such a short space of time,” said Clare, who has two dogs of her own, Pixie and Penny.
“It’s clear that people are looking for community, some people are saying they can’t wait to get out and meet people in real life when we can.
“The point I wanted to make is it’s got to be a really nice and courteous group where people can support and make friendships over a shared love of dogs.”

With dog thefts on the rise in Sussex, Clare said the safety of people’s dogs is central to the group.
New members are then encouraged to introduce themselves with a picture of their pets, but have no obligation to interact in future.
The community has already proved vital for sharing tips on good vets, groomers and trainers, as well as advice on nutrition, behaviour and training from experienced dog owners.

Some are now looking forward to meeting each other in the flesh when lockdown restrictions are eased.
“It’s such a broad spectrum of local people just loving their dogs and wanting the best for them,” said Clare.
The group also supports charity Hounds for Heroes, which trains service dogs for injured members of the armed forces and the emergency services.
