Captain Moore captured the nation’s hearts when he launched a 100th birthday fundraiser for the NHS by completing 100 laps of his garden.
He hoped to raise just £1,000. But, to date, the Second World War veteran has raised more than £25 million for NHS Charities Together.

A Facebook page has been set up to organise the event, called ‘Whole nation to sing happy birthday to Captain Tom Moore for 100th birthday’.
According to the captain’s fundraising page, he was born in Yorkshire and went on to be enlisted in the 8 Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (145 Royal Armoured Corps) at the beginning of the war.
In 1940 he was selected for officer training. He was posted to 9DWR in India, and served and fought on the Arakan, before going to regiment to Sumatra after the Japanese surrender.
