Recognition for local people in New Year Honours List
Joan Cusack, who lives at Ditchling Common, near Burgess Hill, receives the British Empire Medal for services to education.
Joan is a reading volunteer at Woodlands Meed School, Burgess Hill, which teaches children with special educational needs.

Hide AdShe has provided voluntary services to help children at Woodlands Meed and previous schools for the last 26 years by helping special needs pupils aged from 5 to 11.
He citation says Joan continues to provide support to the school and consistently displays patience and good humour in her dealings with the children.
In the honours list, David Wright, from Haywards Heath, lately a flight data monitoring specialist with the Civil Aviation Authority, is awarded the MBE for services to aviation safety.
Among the awards from wider afield actress Penelope Keith, from Chichester becomes a Dame, and singer Katherine Jenkins, (pictured) who has starred in several successful It’s Magic concerts at Haywards Heath, receives the OBE.
