Gillian Madeley easily topped a by-election called to fill the vacancy on Arun District Council left by the death of former Tory councillor Alan Stainton. She received 630 votes in the polling last Thursdayto finish well ahead of the Liberal Democrats' candidate Martin Lury with 269 votes. Third place was filled by the British National Party's Michael Witchell, on 165 votes. He was followed by Joan Phillips, of the United Kingdom Independence Party, with 89 votes and Labour's Michelle White who received 56 votes. The turnout was 30.2 per cent. The result restores the Conservatives to 42 seats out of Arun's 56 councillors. Mr Stainton died last December after having been a district councillor since May 1995. What do you think?
