A person has been hit by a train between Three Bridges and Brighton, Southern Rail said.
All lines were blocked due to the incident, with rail bosses urging people to delay travelling.
A spokesman said: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between Three Bridges and Brighton.”

Hide AdServices are returning to normal but ticket acceptance is in place on the following routes, Southern said.
On Metrobus routes 271, 272 and 273. These run between Crawley, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Brighton.
Acceptance is also in place for Brighton & Hove Buses via any reasonable route.
Service is expected to return to normal around 5.30pm.
